In a disturbing development in the Mahalakshmi murder case, the accused, Muktiranjan Pratap Ray, left behind a chilling death note stating, “If I had not killed her, Mahalakshmi would have killed me.” Following the murder, he died by suicide after dismembering Mahalakshmi’s body into over 30 pieces, which were stuffed in a refrigerator.
Mahalakshmi, a 29-year-old saleswoman, had been missing since early September, and her remains were discovered on September 21 after neighbors reported a foul smell emanating from her apartment. The police confirmed that her body was cut into 59 pieces, indicating a meticulously planned crime.
The death note alleged that Mahalakshmi intended to murder Ray and had purchased a black suitcase to conceal his body. During the investigation, police found a black suitcase near the refrigerator in her home, corroborating the claims made in the note.
Ray, aged 31, was later found dead under a tree in Bhadrak district, Odisha, with a purported suicide note confessing to Mahalakshmi’s murder. Their relationship reportedly became strained due to Mahalakshmi’s pressure for marriage, leading to frequent arguments. Police reports suggest that Ray’s short temper resulted in a fatal altercation, ultimately culminating in the tragic events.
