Couple Fined for Dumping Pet Dog in River Cauvery in Madikeri
A tragic incident unfolded in Kodagu, Madikeri, where a couple abandoned their pet dog by dumping it into the River Cauvery. The event took place within the Hodduru Panchayat limits, sparking outrage in the community.
The couple, Kariappa and Veena from Paluru village, traveled 5 kilometers to the River Cauvery near Hodduru. They were seen carrying their pet dog in a gunny bag. Upon reaching a bridge, they got out of their car and threw the collared and chained dog, still in the bag, into the river. A civic worker witnessed the act and immediately informed the Hodduru Grama Panchayat President, Hamza.
Hamza and others rushed to the scene to rescue the dog but, unfortunately, it had already drowned. Hamza explained that illegal dumping is a recurring issue in the area, and a worker was stationed to monitor such activities. The worker was horrified to see the couple dump their sick dog in the river, bypassing installed CCTV cameras.
The couple claimed their dog was suffering from a prolonged illness, which led them to this extreme decision. While they tried to avoid penalties by reaching out to influential contacts, the panchayat fined them Rs 3,000 and issued a stern warning. Hamza emphasized the importance of keeping the river clean, especially since it is a source of drinking water.
