A Kundapur court has denied bail and ordered judicial custody for a mother and her partner accused of violently assaulting her three-and-a-half-year-old child in Amasebail. The court rejected the bail applications of the mother, Poornapriya, and her partner, Suhail, on Tuesday.
The horrifying incident came to light on September 13 when Poornapriya brought her child to the Udupi government hospital, claiming the child required treatment for health issues. Upon examination, medical staff discovered severe injuries on the unconscious child. Suspecting foul play, the district health officer notified the district child protection unit, which promptly transferred the child to a private hospital for further care. After treatment, the child recovered, leading child protection officer Mahesh Devadiga to conduct an investigation that resulted in a complaint being filed at the Amasebail police station.
During recovery, the child was interviewed, and the mother initially attributed the injuries to a fall. However, a thorough investigation by the Child Protection Committee revealed a more troubling reality. It was uncovered that Poornapriya, frustrated with her child’s refusal to sleep in bed, along with Suhail, had subjected the child to severe abuse, targeting sensitive areas of the child’s body.
On October 24, the accused surrendered to court and sought bail. In light of the serious nature of the case, assistant public prosecutor Uday Kumar filed a plea to cancel the previously granted interim bail. Consequently, the second additional civil court JMF denied their bail applications, ordering judicial custody instead.
