Highway Scam: Bike-Borne Miscreants Target Car Drivers with Fake Fire Alerts
Incidents of bike-riding thieves tricking car passengers into stopping with false warnings about fires in their vehicles are increasing along the Mangaluru-Bengaluru highway, particularly near Channarayapatna and Maddur.
Ashokvardhan, a resident of Mangaluru, was traveling to Bengaluru with his wife when two men on a bike signaled him to pull over, pointing to his front tire. Although initially cautious, Ashokvardhan continued driving. The bikers then pretended that part of his car was on fire.
Eventually, he stopped the car, and the bikers urged him to check under the bonnet, claiming to see smoke. However, being aware of such scams, Ashokvardhan refused to exit the car and drove away, narrowly escaping their trap. He later shared his experience on social media.
Others from the coastal region have fallen victim to similar tricks, losing Rs 7,000 to Rs 27,000. The miscreants create fake fires using camphor and then sell counterfeit parts under the guise of mechanics, robbing unsuspecting drivers.
Ashokvardhan advises travelers to ignore such warnings and only stop in crowded areas if necessary.
