In a shocking case, a two-and-a-half-month-old baby boy was rescued by the district child protection unit and local women police in Davangere after allegedly being sold on August 26 using forged documents. Eight individuals, including a gynaecologist, have been arrested in connection with the crime.
The infant, born to Kavya, a divorcee from Davangere, was reportedly sold to Jaya and Prashanth Kumar from Vinobhanagar by Dr. Bharathi of MK Memorial Hospital, facilitated by accomplices Vadiraj, Manjamma, Suresh, and Ramesh. The accused have confessed to their involvement and have been remanded in judicial custody for 14 days. The baby is now in the care of a local government children’s home.
The rescue operation was initiated after a tip-off from a child helpline. District child protection officer TN Kavitha and her team visited the couple’s home, where they requested the baby’s birth certificate and medical records. Kavya, struggling financially, had agreed to sell her baby for ₹5 lakh to Jaya and Prashanth, who were childless.
Vadiraj, with connections to Dr. Bharathi and Manjula, facilitated the creation of fake birth certificates, falsely registering the baby’s birth at the Davangere City Corporation’s office. A case has been filed under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, and the Child Protection Act, 2004.
