In a significant ruling, the Davangere Principal District and Sessions Court has sentenced Mahadeva alias Mahadevappa to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh for the murder of his wife, AG Shaila. The court’s verdict followed the successful prosecution of Mahadeva for physically and mentally harassing his wife, ultimately leading to her death.
Case Background:
Shaila was married to Mahadeva, a resident of Koratigere village. However, their marriage was marred by domestic abuse, with Mahadeva reportedly mistreating his wife. On October 15, 2014, Shaila’s relatives filed a complaint alleging that Mahadeva had intentionally murdered her by poisoning her food.
The Santhebennur police, led by Sub-Inspector Pampapathy, investigated the case. The investigation revealed that Mahadeva had administered sevoflurane anesthesia to Shaila, held her nose to suffocate her, and caused her death. Based on the evidence, a chargesheet was filed, and Mahadeva was brought to trial.
Court Verdict:
Judge Rajeshwari N. Hegde of the Davangere court sentenced Mahadeva to life imprisonment and fined him Rs 1 lakh. The court further ruled that Rs 80,000 of the fine be paid to Shaila’s parents, with the remaining Rs 20,000 forfeited. Government lawyer Manjunath represented the deceased’s family during the proceedings.
This verdict highlights the court’s commitment to holding perpetrators of domestic violence accountable and ensuring justice for victims of such heinous crimes.
