A person lost nearly ₹9.8 lakh in an online investment scam after falling prey to fraudulent promises of high returns. The incident began on July 6, when the complainant received a WhatsApp message from a website link named ‘Work From Home Prepaid Task, Yumbrand,’ which claimed that an investment of ₹10,000 would yield a return of ₹18,000.

Trusting the offer, the complainant transferred ₹10,000 to an account provided by the scammers. The following day, the complainant was contacted again and instructed to invest an additional ₹40,000. However, when an attempt was made to withdraw the funds, the complainant was shocked to see a negative balance displayed.

The website then directed the complainant to complete a series of tasks in order to retrieve the money. By August 8, the complainant had completed 28 tasks and transferred a total of ₹9.8 lakh to various accounts specified by the scammers. Realizing the deception, the complainant reported the incident to the authorities. A case has been registered at the Mangaluru South police station, and an investigation is underway.
