In a disturbing case of online harassment, Surathkal police in Mangaluru have arrested a man from Idya village for allegedly hacking into a young woman’s Facebook account and sending her threatening messages. The accused, Sharik, reportedly targeted the woman and her family, using the compromised account to send obscene and violent messages.
The incident came to light when the woman lodged a formal complaint with the Surathkal police on October 22, reporting that her Facebook account had been hacked. She stated that her brother, Kishan, and a friend, Harshit, had received disturbing messages from her account. In one of the messages, the hacker threatened her brother, reportedly saying that he must “convince his sister to love him” or else he would “cut her into 24 pieces.”
Given the nature of the threat, the police acted swiftly, initiating an investigation and arresting the suspect. Law enforcement also responded to social media posts about the incident, which had sparked concern and discussions among local residents. Several Hindu groups had expressed their intentions to stage protests, urging authorities to take quick action to prevent further escalation.
The accused has been detained and charged under several sections of the Indian Penal Code related to criminal intimidation, harassment, and cyber-crimes. Police officials have emphasized their commitment to curbing such cyber harassment cases, warning that they will take strict action against any individual using digital platforms to threaten or intimidate others.
Local leaders and citizens are calling for greater awareness around cyber safety and are encouraging people to report any suspicious activity on social media platforms. Meanwhile, the Surathkal police have assured the public that the investigation is ongoing and any further suspects connected to the incident will be pursued.
