Kankanady Town police arrested Rohit Mathais, a resident of Belman, Karkala, for allegedly stealing gold jewellery and cash nearly three years ago. The arrest led to the recovery of gold jewellery worth ₹7 lakh. City police commissioner Anupam Agrawal stated that the crime was initially reported in December 2021 when Rohit, living with a woman in Kulasekhar, stole valuables from her home. A case was registered at Kankanady Town police station.

Rohit has a criminal background. In 2019, he and accomplices were involved in the murder of Bharatalakshmi, a retired PDO, in Karkala, stealing her money and jewellery. Her body was found in a well. Despite being arrested, Rohit escaped trial and had been on the run for two years.

Known for befriending women on social media and later stealing from them, Rohit was finally caught after returning from Mumbai, thanks to a tip-off. The operation was overseen by commissioner Anupam Agrawal and DCPs Sidharth Goyal and Dinesh Kumar, with a team led by inspector Nagaraj TD.
