Protests erupted in Bidar, Karnataka, after an 18-year-old tribal woman was found raped and murdered, leading to the arrest of three suspects. The woman, belonging to a Scheduled Tribe (ST), had been reported missing on August 29. Her body was discovered in the bushes near a government school on September 1.
Initially registered as a murder case, the charges were later amended to include rape after a post-mortem revealed she had been sexually assaulted. Police reported that the victim died from a fatal head injury inflicted by the accused with a stone. The prime suspect, who was related to the victim, raped and murdered her while his two friends kept watch in a nearby car.
Superintendent of Police Pradeep Gunte stated that all three suspects have been arrested, and a special three-member team has been formed to investigate the case further.
The incident sparked widespread protests across Bidar, with hundreds demanding justice for the victim. Karnataka Minister Eshwar Khandre visited the victim’s family, condemning the crime as “the most satanic act” and announcing a ₹4 lakh compensation for the family. He assured that stringent punishment would be given to the perpetrators.
