In a troubling incident, 63-year-old Henry D’Souza from Marne village was robbed by two unidentified men who pretended to assist him at a Karnataka Bank ATM in Ajekaru on September 16, 2024.
Accompanied by his wife, Mary, who has an account with Equitas Small Finance Bank Limited, Henry attempted to withdraw cash using her ATM card around 5:45 PM. While at the ATM, the two men approached him, gaining his trust and taking possession of his card along with his PIN. In a deceitful act, they swapped his card with another, claiming the transaction had failed.
Unbeknownst to Henry, the fraudsters then used the stolen card to make 10 transactions of Rs 10,000 each, withdrawing a total of Rs 1 lakh from his wife’s account at a Bank of Baroda ATM in Karkala.
A complaint has been filed at the Ajekaru Police Station, and investigations are ongoing. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and cautious when using ATMs, especially when approached by strangers offering assistance.
