Surge In Parents Paying Fines As Minors Caught Performing Wheelies In Bengaluru

The number of parents and guardians paying court fines for allowing their minor children to perform wheelies on two-wheelers in Bengaluru has surged fourfold since 2022, according to police records. In 2022, the parents or guardians of 22 minors were fined for such offenses, averaging fewer than two per month. This figure rose significantly in 2023, with 71 parents or guardians fined, averaging six per month. The first seven months of 2024 have already seen 74 adults paying fines, with a monthly average of over ten.

Fines paid by these parents/guardians totaled nearly ₹2.4 lakh in 2022, averaging ₹10,700 per person. In 2023, the amount skyrocketed to ₹10.3 lakh, with an average fine of ₹14,600 per head. So far this year, 74 parents/guardians have paid ₹5.2 lakh in fines, averaging ₹7,000 per person. The fine per head can reach up to ₹25,000, depending on the court’s discretion.

Under the Indian Motor Vehicles Act, parents or guardians of minors caught performing wheelies are held accountable and may also bear hospital expenses if their wards cause injuries. The number of adults caught performing bike stunts has also increased, with 214 adults fined in 2023, and 283 caught in the first seven months of this year.

Joint Commissioner (Traffic) M.N. Anucheth expressed concern over the alarming rise in such cases, emphasizing the importance of spreading awareness against giving vehicles to minors and the dangers of wheelie stunts.
