Two Arrested for Cybercrime Involving Impersonation of Officials, Rs 1.33 Crore Swindled
The Udupi CEN Police have arrested two individuals from Gujarat in connection with a cybercrime where they impersonated customs and police officers to swindle Rs 1.33 crore from a 53-year-old man. The suspects, identified as Navadia Mukeshbhai Ganeshbhai, 44, from Surat, and Dharamjeet Kamlesh Chauhan, 28, from Rajkot, were apprehended after a thorough investigation led by Udupi Superintendent of Police Dr. Arun K. The police recovered Rs 13.95 lakh and five mobile phones from the accused.
The victim, Arun Kumar, reported receiving a call on July 29 from someone claiming to be a customs official. The caller falsely accused him of booking a FedEx courier containing illegal items using his Aadhaar number. When Kumar denied involvement, he was connected to someone impersonating a senior police officer, who falsely claimed that his Aadhaar card was linked to bank accounts used by terrorists. Under the pretense of resolving the issue, the fraudsters confined Kumar to a room in his house from July 29 to August 9 and coerced him into transferring money to various bank accounts.
A special police team, led by Inspector Ramachandra Nayak and including several officers, was formed to investigate. The police monitored the bank accounts involved in the scam, leading to the timely arrest of the suspects when they attempted to withdraw the funds.
