Dalit Youth Tied to Electric Pole and Thrashed in Koppal
A 21-year-old Dalit youth, Guddadappa Mullanna, was subjected to a brutal attack in Bochanahalli, Koppal taluk, on Friday. He was tied to an electric pole and beaten by a group of youths over a dispute. Guddadappa, a member of the Madiga community, filed a complaint at Alavandi police station, naming six individuals from the Valmiki community as his attackers.
According to the complaint, the conflict began with a verbal altercation earlier in the day, when Guddadappa was confronted for smoking in a common area of the village. The situation escalated, with the accused allegedly hurling casteist slurs at him. Later in the evening, they tied him to an electric pole and severely beat him.
Police have arrested three of the six accused so far. Among them is Naganagouda Police Patil, one of the attackers who also sustained injuries during the fight. Patil has filed a counter-complaint, accusing Guddadappa and his family of threatening his life.
The incident has highlighted ongoing caste tensions in the region. Authorities are investigating both complaints, and further arrests are expected. The case has raised concerns about social harmony and the treatment of marginalized communities.
