Despite developing software for a pre-paid autorickshaw service in Davangere, Davangere Smart City Limited (DSCL) is awaiting approval from the district administration to implement the system. The initiative, designed to ensure round-the-clock auto availability, passenger safety, and fare transparency, remains stalled due to delays in finalizing fare structures and gathering necessary data.
A year ago, the police requested DSCL to create software for pre-paid auto services. The software, now nearly complete, was intended for a pilot rollout at the railway station and KSRTC bus terminal. However, DSCL Managing Director Veeresh Kumar revealed that the Regional Transport Department has yet to decide on fare rates in consultation with autorickshaw drivers. Essential details, such as driver contact information and vehicle chassis numbers, are still pending.
Regional Transport Officer Pramutesh stated that the pre-paid service was recently discussed in a meeting with the deputy commissioner and superintendent of police. He added that the district administration is now seriously considering the proposal, with over 7,500 autorickshaw details already shared with the police. Deputy Commissioner G.M. Gangadharaswamy assured that steps would be taken to balance public safety with the interests of auto drivers.
Given Davangere’s status as an educational hub with several colleges, the system could significantly benefit students and visitors by offering safer and more transparent transportation options. DSCL plans to establish a 24/7 help desk for emergencies, ensuring the service meets public and driver expectations.
