Mayakonda (Davanagere): A leisurely Sunday outing ended in tragedy when two SSLC students drowned in the Bhadra canal near Kurki village.
The victims, identified as Panduranga and Yathindra, had visited the village for the weekend. While near the canal, Yathindra, who was not a swimmer, lost his footing and slipped into the water. As he struggled, Panduranga, driven by instinct to save his friend, jumped in to help. Unfortunately, the strong current overpowered both of them.
Despite their desperate efforts, neither could make it to safety. Witnesses rushed to seek help, but by the time assistance arrived, the two had already disappeared beneath the water.
Authorities were alerted, and local residents joined in the search operation. Their bodies were later recovered, bringing heartbreak to their families and the community.
The Hadai police have registered a case and initiated an investigation to understand the circumstances leading to the incident. Officials have once again urged caution around water bodies, especially for those unfamiliar with swimming.
This tragic event serves as a grim reminder of the dangers of open water and the importance of safety precautions near rivers and canals.
