Delhi Man Electrocuted by Waterlogged Road, Second Incident in Two Weeks
Delhi, Aug 23 : A 50-year-old man, identified as Sanjay, was electrocuted to death on Thursday evening after coming into contact with an electrified waterlogged road outside his house in Delhi’s Rohini area. This incident highlights ongoing concerns about waterlogging and electrical safety in the city.
The tragedy occurred in the Prem Nagar area of Rohini, where heavy rainfall had led to significant water accumulation on the road. According to witnesses, Sanjay slipped into the water, which was electrically charged, resulting in electrocution. Emergency services were alerted, but Sanjay was already pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
Residents attempted to rescue Sanjay but were unsuccessful. They reported that this incident marks the second occurrence of electrocution due to waterlogging in Agar Nagar within the past two weeks. The previous incident also involved a fatal electrocution caused by waterlogged conditions.
Local residents have repeatedly complained to civic authorities about persistent waterlogging problems, but no effective measures have been taken to resolve the issue. The lack of action has exacerbated the risk of electrocution and other hazards associated with inadequate drainage and electrical safety.
The police have sent Sanjay’s body for a postmortem examination and are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death. The case has drawn attention to the broader issue of electrical safety and infrastructure maintenance in the city.
This latest incident is part of a troubling pattern of electrocution cases linked to poor infrastructure and waterlogging:
- Kanwar Yatra Tragedy: Earlier this month, five pilgrims, including two children, were electrocuted when their vehicle collided with a high-tension overhead wire in Latehar district, Jharkhand. The collision occurred in the Tam Tam Tola area around 3:00 am, resulting in injuries to three additional people. The vehicle, returning from the Baba Baidyanath shrine, came into contact with an electrical pole.
- July Electrocution: In July, a civil service applicant was electrocuted in Patel Nagar, Delhi. The individual, residing in a PG near Power Gym and Patel Nagar metro station, was found clinging to an iron gate that had become electrically charged due to severe flooding in the area. The incident was reported to the police at around 2:43 pm.
These incidents underscore the urgent need for improved infrastructure, better management of waterlogging, and rigorous enforcement of electrical safety standards to prevent further tragedies.
