In a significant breakthrough for local law enforcement, the Gadag police have successfully recovered 226 bags of red chilies, valued at ₹6 lakh, that were stolen in a well-orchestrated scam involving traders from Gujarat. The stolen produce was located in a cold storage facility in Surat, highlighting ongoing vulnerabilities in the agricultural market.
The fraudulent operation began in May 2024 when two traders, identified as Babri Anand Jayantilal and Bavin Ruparella, approached Nazeera Sadiq S.A. Khazi, a reputable chili trader at the Betageri Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) in Gadag. After negotiating a deal, the traders acquired the high-quality chilies but absconded without making the necessary payment, leaving Nazeera in a dire financial situation.
Upon realising the deceit, Nazeera promptly reported the incident to the Betageri Police Station, triggering an immediate investigation.
Acting swiftly on the complaint, Gadag District Superintendent of Police (SP) B.S. Nemagoud formed a special investigative team. This team, led by Additional SP M.B. Sankad and Deputy SP G.H. Inamdar, included experienced officers such as CPI Dheeraj B. Sindhe and PSI Maruti Jogadankar. Their relentless pursuit of leads led them to trace the stolen goods to Uma Cold Storage in Surat.
The team conducted a thorough search operation, resulting in the discovery of the 226 bags stored at the cold storage facility. Following legal protocols, the bags were seized and transported back to Gadag, where they are currently secured in a local warehouse while further investigations continue.
This recovery underscores the sophisticated tactics employed by some criminal networks within the agricultural market. The case has raised significant concerns among local farmers and vendors, who rely on trust and fair dealings in their transactions. Nazeera, the affected trader, expressed the emotional and financial toll of the incident, stating, “This fraud has disrupted our livelihoods. The financial loss has been immense, and while the goods have been returned, the emotional toll is difficult to overcome. We hope authorities will ensure stronger safeguards against such scams in the future.”
In response to the incident, the community has voiced the need for stricter regulations to protect against future fraud. Local law enforcement has reiterated the importance of vigilance and transparency in business dealings, particularly with traders from outside the region.
As the investigation continues, authorities remain committed to apprehending the traders responsible for this scam. The Special Investigation Team is actively pursuing leads to ensure justice for the affected trader and to reinforce trust in Gadag’s agricultural trade sector.
The successful recovery of the stolen red chili bags highlights both the challenges and vulnerabilities faced by the agricultural market in Gadag. With authorities taking decisive action, there is hope for increased protections and renewed confidence among local traders, ensuring that fair business practices are upheld in the future.
