Dharwad: The Narayana Heart Centre at SDM Hospital achieved a major milestone by successfully performing its first Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI), a cutting-edge minimally invasive cardiac procedure.
A breakthrough in cardiac care
The procedure was performed on a 62-year-old patient, Mr. RS Patil (name changed for confidentiality), who suffered from severe calcific aortic stenosis. Symptoms included breathlessness and chest discomfort.
Led by Dr. Raghu Prasad S, the skilled medical team replaced the diseased aortic valve via a catheter inserted through the right femoral artery. Post-procedure, the prosthetic valve was confirmed to be well-seated with no leaks. The patient’s left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) improved significantly from 30% to 55%.
Quick recovery and gratitude
The one-and-a-half-hour procedure resulted in a rapid recovery, with the patient discharged just three days later. Expressing gratitude, the patient and family appreciated the dedication and expertise of the medical team.
A commitment to world-class care
Dr. Raghu Prasad highlighted the centre’s commitment to making advanced cardiac procedures accessible to North Karnataka patients. “This is a proud moment for our hospital. We are bringing world-class cardiac care closer to home,” he said.
