Dharwad: In an effort to prevent illegal activities inside Dharwad Central Jail, authorities have installed signal jammers to curb unauthorized mobile communication among inmates. However, these measures have unintended consequences for nearby residents, particularly students and hospital visitors.
The Central Jail houses high-risk inmates, including terrorism-related convicts, necessitating strict security. However, recent changes in jammer intensity have severely disrupted mobile connectivity in surrounding areas. This has hampered students’ online studies and affected communication at Dimhans Hospital, where patients and nursing students struggle with signal loss.
With Dharwad’s urban expansion, the jail is no longer isolated but surrounded by residential areas. Locals are now urging the government to consider relocating the prison outside city limits to avoid further inconvenience.
Moreover, jail officials remain unreachable, as landlines have reportedly been removed, making clarity on the issue difficult. While security is essential, authorities are being urged to strike a balance that does not disrupt daily life for residents.
