A chilling near-miss in Layton, Utah, was caught on camera as a driver barely avoided death by leaping from their SUV just seconds before a speeding train demolished it. The dramatic footage, shared by Collin Rugg on X, has amassed over nine million views, leaving viewers stunned by the driver’s last-second decision.

The terrifying ordeal occurred on a Tuesday afternoon when another vehicle pushed the SUV onto the train tracks. As the warning lights flashed and the boom gate lowered, the driver desperately attempted to reverse but remained stuck. Trapped with a FrontRunner train hurtling toward them, they made a split-second choice—abandon the vehicle and run. Moments later, the train plowed into the SUV, shredding its front end and sending debris flying. The impact also destroyed a crossing post and the gate arm.

Online reactions have been divided, with many questioning why the driver didn’t simply drive forward. “It made more sense to just go through,” one user remarked. Others defended the driver, pointing out that shock and confusion likely impaired their judgment.

UTA’s public information officer, Gavin Gustafson, expressed relief that no injuries occurred, though the train sustained over $100,000 in damages. While hindsight may offer clear choices, he acknowledged that in high-pressure moments, human instincts often override logic.
