A heartfelt video shared by an African student studying in India has gone viral on social media, resonating with thousands for its honest portrayal of cultural transition, loneliness, growth and newfound confidence.
Viral post captures life as an international student
Charity Namusokwe, an African student pursuing her university education in India, shared a video on Instagram titled “POV: You moved to India for university as an African”. The video offers glimpses of her daily life on campus, including wearing a saree, attending college festivals, visiting salons, and navigating moments of isolation far from home.
Early challenges in a new country
Namusokwe spoke candidly about the initial difficulties of adapting to a new culture. She recalled being frequently asked about her background and her decision to study in India, while also struggling with language barriers and cultural differences. She admitted that adjusting to a new environment while being constantly noticed was emotionally challenging.
Despite missing home at times, she said she gradually found her place and rhythm in India.
Finding kindness, belonging and growth
What stood out in her reflection was the kindness she encountered along the way. Namusokwe highlighted new friendships, warm conversations and small everyday moments that helped her feel welcomed. From embracing Indian attire to enjoying simple routines, she said these experiences slowly built her sense of belonging.
India, she said, taught her patience, resilience and appreciation for diverse cultures, while allowing her to meet “some of the most amazing human beings”.
‘India boosted my self-esteem’
In a powerful note, Namusokwe said living in India gave her the courage to try things she never imagined, including creating content online. “This place boosted my self-esteem. I could be who I wanted without judgment,” she shared, adding that moving away from family, though difficult, helped her grow into a stronger and more confident individual.
Internet responds with warmth
