Mangaluru: The NSS Unit and the First Year Department of Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management (SCEM), in association with the Kankanady Town Police Station, jointly organised an Awareness Programme on Cyber Security and Drug Abuse on October 11, 2025, at the Sahyadri Campus, Mangaluru.

The event aimed to educate students on the growing risks of cybercrime and substance abuse, empowering them to make informed and responsible choices in an increasingly digital and complex world.

Guests and Dignitaries

The programme was inaugurated in the presence of Ms Vijayakranthi, ACP, Mangalore South Sub-Division, who was the Chief Guest of the session. The Resource Persons included Mr Harish A, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, SCEM, and Dr Bindu Rani, Counsellor, LINK De-addiction Centre, Bajal.

The event was graced by Dr S.S. Injaganeri, Principal, and Dr Prashanth Rao, Head of the First Year Department and Dean of Student Welfare. Dr Prashanth Rao welcomed the gathering, introducing the guests and emphasising the relevance of addressing cyber security threats and drug abuse — two major challenges faced by today’s youth.

Keynote Address: Building Awareness and Resilience

In her keynote address, Ms Vijayakranthi highlighted the alarming rise in cyber fraud incidents, cautioning students to verify online information before sharing personal details. She spoke about the importance of responsible internet use, digital literacy, and maintaining a drug-free lifestyle, encouraging students to channel their energy towards personal growth and positive engagement.

She also urged students to “believe in their potential and stay focused on their goals,” underscoring that self-discipline and awareness are crucial to success both online and offline.

Understanding Cybercrime and Digital Responsibility

Mr Harish A explored the technical dimensions of cybercrime, explaining critical topics such as hacking, ransomware, phishing, and zero-click attacks. He cautioned that “it takes 20 years to build a reputation and only a few minutes to destroy it through cyber negligence,” reinforcing the importance of vigilance and responsible digital behaviour.

His session provided students with a comprehensive understanding of how everyday online activities — from social media use to financial transactions — can expose them to risks if proper cyber hygiene is not maintained.

Addressing Substance Abuse: The Psychological Perspective

Dr Bindu Rani spoke about the psychological and behavioural aspects of substance abuse, outlining the types of addictive substances, their mental health effects, and the social challenges they cause.

She encouraged students to adopt healthy coping mechanisms, such as sports, meditation, and peer discussions, and to seek timely support when dealing with emotional or psychological stress. Her talk emphasised that awareness and empathy can play a major role in preventing addiction and promoting mental well-being among young adults.

Institutional Perspective and Closing Remarks

In his concluding remarks, Dr S.S. Injaganeri motivated students to stay resilient in the face of academic or personal challenges. He reminded them that technology, when used responsibly, can be a force for transformation and progress.

He also appreciated the collaborative efforts of the NSS Unit and First Year Department in organising an event that not only educated students but also inspired them to become responsible digital citizens and health-conscious individuals.

Impact and Outcome

The session proved to be highly informative and interactive, sparking meaningful discussions among students. It successfully raised awareness of the dual threats of cyber insecurity and substance abuse, encouraging participants to make mindful choices and lead balanced, ethical lives.

The initiative aligns with Sahyadri College’s ongoing commitment to student welfare, value-based education, and community awareness programmes.
