An awareness programme on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and Child Helpline was held at the School of Social Work Roshni Nilaya on Tuesday. The event was jointly organized by the Department of Women and Child Development, School of Social Work Roshni Nilaya, District Legal Services Authority, District Bar Association, Child Helpline, and District Child Protection Unit.

Shobha BG, member secretary of the District Legal Services Authority, inaugurated the programme. In her opening remarks, she emphasized the importance of awareness and education in safeguarding children from sexual offenses. She highlighted the POCSO Act’s provisions, designed to protect children and ensure a safe and supportive environment for them.

The programme aimed to educate attendees on the POCSO Act’s legal framework, reporting mechanisms, and the role of the Child Helpline in providing immediate assistance to children in distress. Representatives from the organizing bodies shared insights into the collaborative efforts required to protect children’s rights and the critical role that community involvement plays in preventing child abuse.

Workshops and interactive sessions were conducted to engage participants, including students, educators, and social workers, in discussions about child protection strategies. Participants were encouraged to spread awareness within their communities and to utilize the resources available through the Child Helpline and other support services.

The event underscored the collective responsibility of society to protect children and ensure their well-being. By fostering a deeper understanding of the POCSO Act and the Child Helpline, the programme aimed to create a safer environment for children in Mangaluru and beyond.
