Ujire: SDM College, Ujire, in Belthangady taluk was filled with emotion, gratitude and nostalgia on Saturday as generations of journalism students returned to campus to honour Dr. Bhaskara Hegde, Head of the Department of Journalism, on the day of his retirement after 33 years of dedicated service.

The felicitation programme, titled ‘Bhaskara Parva – A Tribute to the Media Teacher’, brought together alumni from batches dating back to 1993, making it a rare reunion of former students who came to celebrate a mentor who shaped their professional and personal journeys at a time when journalism education itself was still evolving in Karnataka.

A pioneer of journalism education at SDM College

SDM College, Ujire, is among the earliest institutions in the state to introduce a journalism course nearly four decades ago. Former students recalled how Dr. Hegde played a pivotal role in building the department from the ground up, emphasising discipline, ethical journalism and hands-on learning.

Dr. Hegde began his career as a journalist in Hubballi, where he worked for three years before joining SDM College in August 1993. Over the years, he served not only as Head of the Department but also as a member of Boards of Studies and examination boards of several universities and autonomous colleges across Karnataka.

Teacher who prioritised practice over theory

Former student and Kuvempu University professor Prof. Sathish Kumar Andinje said Dr. Hegde consistently stressed practical learning over classroom theory.

“At a time when formal journalism education was rare, he built the department with vision and commitment. What truly made him unique was his relationship with students—he continues to inspire them even decades later,” he said.

Alumni recall a mentor, not just a teacher

Sahana M, Secretary of the Karnataka Media Academy and a student of the 1994–97 batch, described Dr. Hegde as a teacher deeply respected for his student-centric approach.

“Bhaskara Parva was organised to celebrate him as an outstanding teacher. His humility, patience and genuine concern for students set him apart. He was a true guru, mentor and guide,” she said.

Documentary, festschrift and scholarship announced

As part of the event, a documentary tracing Dr. Hegde’s academic and professional journey was released by Shraddha Amith, CEO of Kshemavana, who is also his former student. She recalled how he imparted life lessons alongside academic training, shaping students far beyond the classroom.

A festschrift (Abhinandana Grantha) commemorating his lifelong contribution to journalism education was also released. On the occasion, a scholarship for journalism students was announced, marking a continuation of his legacy of nurturing young media professionals.

Senior faculty and management attend

The programme was presided over by SDM College Principal Prof. Vishwanatha P, and attended by Dr. Satheeshchandra S, Secretary of the SDM Educational Society, along with faculty members, students and alumni.
