CHENNAI: Bihar Governor Arif Mohammed Khan emphasized that Indian education is not just a means of empowerment, but a pathway to liberation, during his address at the 13th Think Edu Conclave on Tuesday. He contrasted the Western education model, which centers on individual and societal empowerment, with the Indian education approach, which aims at the liberation of the individual.
In his discussion with TNIE Editorial Director Prabhu Chawla, Khan pointed out that one major factor contributing to societal discord is India’s continued adherence to the colonial-era education system. He argued that the growth of knowledge must be balanced with wisdom. Without moral and ethical grounding, individuals may easily turn into “brutes,” he cautioned.
Khan also reflected on the perception of increasing divisions within India, stating that while it might appear so, the root cause lies in an education system disconnected from Indian philosophical traditions. He added that education should teach not only self-improvement but also how to use the power gained through it ethically. The introduction of Indian knowledge systems under the New Education Policy (NEP) is a step toward addressing this issue.
Emphasizing the divinity inherent in all people, Khan explained that Indian education fosters an understanding that recognizing the divinity in others promotes compassion and unity. He further noted that the persistence of the colonial education model is a self-imposed barrier, despite the end of colonial rule. Lastly, he reinforced his stance against appeasement, asserting that equality is the cornerstone of a true democracy.
