Mangaluru: The Centre for Advanced Learning (CFAL) is excited to announce an exclusive event, “Physics & Math Through Tactile Experience,” featuring distinguished educator Kaushik Basu from the University of California, Berkeley. The event will take place on Sunday, August 4, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM at the ELC Campus, CFAL, Mangalore.

Event Overview

“Physics & Math Through Tactile Experience” is an interactive event designed to engage students and parents in exploring fundamental concepts in physics and mathematics through hands-on activities. Led by renowned educator Kaushik Basu, participants will discover the world of science and math by making direct connections to everyday life, using materials such as paper, tape, strings, and infrared thermometers to experience learning through seeing, hearing, and touching.

2 Tactile Expertience

This event aims to break down formal barriers often associated with these subjects, allowing participants to become active explorers of concepts spanning human vision, acoustics, and the nervous system. The hands-on approach will demonstrate how material objects manifest as waves, utilize geometrical ideas, and engage in various activities to illustrate these concepts.

Kaushik Basu will also share his insights into the broader implications of science education, drawing from his experiences working with students worldwide.

Eligibility and Participation

The event is open to school students in grades 7th to 10th. Interested participants must register through the following link: Registration Form. Registration is limited to 80 participants and will close once this number is reached, offering a unique opportunity for students to learn in an engaging, hands-on environment guided by a leading expert.

About the Speaker

Kaushik Basu is a renowned instructor in Mathematics and Physics at the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Berkeley. With extensive experience in teaching enrichment and accelerated summer classes, he has collaborated with students from the San Francisco Bay Area, South Korea, and Singapore.

Basu’s innovative teaching methods include hands-on electronics classes exploring circuit design, an electromagnetism class focusing on experiments, and an applied physics class introducing Newtonian mechanics through simple toys. Additionally, he teaches physics and art at Proof School in San Francisco and has been involved as a workshop developer at the Pacific Pinball Museum and a speaker at the Marin Math Circle. Mr. Basu is also a visiting professor at ICTS, Bangalore.

His interests lie in teaching and understanding problem-solving as a creative process, mentoring students interested in teaching math and physics, advising teachers on curriculum development, and developing problems for international physics competitions. Beyond teaching, he enjoys swimming long-distance butterfly in the open waters of the San Francisco Bay.
