Dakshina Kannada (DK) district has secured the second position in the SSLC (Secondary School Leaving Certificate) examination for the 2023-24 academic year. With aspirations to claim the top spot in the 2024-25 academic year, the education department has identified 4,742 students as slow learners and is committed to enhancing their academic performance.
Data from the school education and literacy department shows there are 525 high schools in the district, with a total enrollment of 28,612 students for the SSLC exams in the 2024-25 academic year. Of these, 4,742 students are considered slow learners, predominantly located in the Bantwal and Mangaluru South zones.
To address this challenge, the education department, in collaboration with the Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat, has initiated 10 different programs specifically designed to support slow-learning students. These programs are set to be fully implemented by February 2025, according to DDPI (Deputy Director of Public Instruction) Venkatesha Subraya Patagara.
One of the core strategies involves school teachers adopting slow-learning students to provide them with personalized guidance throughout the academic year. Increasing attendance rates is also a priority, as many slow learners tend to miss classes. Teachers responsible for these students will work closely with parents to ensure regular attendance and address any concerns.
Special classes have already been started, where subject teachers dedicate one-hour sessions to focus on slow learners’ needs. Other initiatives include using e-learning tools, providing specialized training for teachers in every subject, and maintaining continuous oversight of educational reforms. Officials make regular visits to high schools to monitor the progress of slow learners and to support teachers with guidance.
Workshops are also organized for slow-learning students to help them face exams with confidence. These workshops are supported by counselors and doctors, aiming to reduce fear and build self-assurance among students as they prepare for their examinations.
With these targeted measures, Dakshina Kannada district is determined to uplift slow learners and achieve the top rank in the SSLC examination for the upcoming academic year.
