Dharwad: Cabinet Greenlights ₹11,829 Cr Expansion for Five New IITs
The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has cleared a major expansion plan for five newer Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), marking a significant push in higher education infrastructure.
The beneficiaries — IIT Tirupati, IIT Palakkad, IIT Bhilai, IIT Jammu, and IIT Dharwad — will see a sharp rise in student intake and faculty positions over the next four years. The total student capacity at these institutes will increase by 6,576, moving from 7,111 to 13,687, spread across undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes.
The planned yearly intake rise is as follows:
-
Year 1: +1,364 students
-
Year 2: +1,738 students
-
Year 3: +1,767 students
-
Year 4: +1,707 students
Additionally, 130 new faculty posts will be created to match this growth.
The expansion comes with an approved budget of ₹11,828.79 crore, which will fund infrastructure development including academic blocks, hostels, research parks, sports facilities, and guest accommodations. These investments fall under the Phase-B construction of the five IITs, all of which were established post-2014 and initially functioned from temporary campuses.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had initially announced this move in her February budget speech, signaling the government’s commitment to strengthening third-generation IITs.
