A recent analysis by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) has revealed the educational backgrounds of the 699 candidates contesting the upcoming Delhi Assembly election, scheduled for February 5. According to the report, 46 percent of the candidates possess education between Class 5 and Class 12, highlighting a broad spectrum of schooling levels.

In contrast, 46 percent of the candidates have attained higher education, including undergraduate degrees, graduate professional qualifications, postgraduates, and even doctoral degrees. Specifically, 126 candidates are graduates, 84 are graduate professionals, 104 hold postgraduate degrees, and 8 candidates have doctorates. Additionally, 18 candidates possess diplomas in various fields, indicating a blend of technical or vocational training.

Notably, the analysis also highlights the inclusion of individuals with lower educational qualifications, with six candidates declaring themselves as literate without formal schooling and 29 candidates identifying as illiterate, demonstrating the democratic inclusivity of the election process.

Compared to the 2020 election, there has been a slight increase in the number of candidates, from 672 to 699. The number of graduate professionals has risen from 62 to 84, while postgraduate candidates have increased from 90 to 104. However, the number of doctorates has decreased from 11 to 8, and the number of illiterate candidates has notably increased from 16 to 29, indicating a wider participation from individuals across all educational levels.

The 70-member Delhi Assembly election will take place on February 5, with results to be announced on February 8.
