Mangaluru: Locals and committee members are working tirelessly to boost student enrollment at Mangalore University’s constituent college in Nelyadi. The university has recently mandated a minimum of 20 first-year admissions for a course to continue, prompting the college’s founding committee to take urgent measures.
The college, which offers courses in commerce and arts, initially began in a rented building about six years ago, serving students from rural areas. Usha Anchan, president of the college’s founding committee, highlighted the effort to prevent the college’s closure. She mentioned that the college was established to fill a void in the region, where no first-grade colleges existed between Sakleshpur and Uppinangady.
Currently, the college has 21 first-year BA and 15 first-year BCom students, with 26 BA and 17 BCom students in the second year. To address the shortfall, the committee is actively recruiting for the BCom course and offering to cover the annual fee of approximately ₹9,000 for new students.
Anchan criticized Mangalore University for creating confusion during the admission season, which led students to seek enrollment at a nearby college instead. The committee has also protested the university’s recent decision to increase the minimum admission requirement from 15 to 20 students per course and submitted a memorandum to Vice-Chancellor PL Dharma.
The college has been allocated 24.5 acres for its own building, which the committee hopes will support its future growth.
