Haveri: Students residing at the post-matric hostel of Government First Grade College, Gandhipur, staged a unique protest on Tuesday by cooking their own food in front of the hostel, voicing their frustration over inadequate infrastructure and broken promises by authorities.
The demonstration, led by the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), Haveri district unit, focused on the lack of basic amenities, delay in repairs, and plans to shift the hostel to a distant location — all of which have adversely affected students’ living and learning conditions.
Despite submitting multiple petitions to taluk officials, students claim they are still deprived of access to library materials, computers, and essential repairs. According to SFI Hostel Unit president Parashuram Koppal, windows and doors damaged by rain have remained unrepaired for months, while library and study resources for competitive exams are nonexistent.
Koppal also mentioned that for over six months, students have been without proper facilities, allegedly due to upcoming relocation. “Authorities only respond during agitations, but the work is never completed,” he said.
SFI district president Basavaraj S criticized the decision to move hostels far from the college, saying it places undue burden on rural students striving for higher education.
Following the protest, social welfare department officials, including Deputy Director Prashant Varagappanavar and Assistant Director Anjaneya Hullal, visited the site and assured students that the relocation plan would be dropped, repairs would be undertaken, books and five computers provided, and essential amenities restored.
