Hubballi: The Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) has intensified its enforcement of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), cracking down on vendors selling tobacco near educational institutions.

During inspections, health officials identified 38 commercial establishments, including street vendors and pushcart sellers, operating within restricted zones. They were found selling cigarettes, gutka, and other tobacco products near schools, violating COTPA guidelines. Notices have been served, giving vendors seven days to relocate or shut down operations.

Officials have warned of strict penalties, including heavy fines and closure, for those who fail to comply. This initiative is part of HDMC’s broader effort to create tobacco-free zones and protect students from exposure to harmful products.

The civic body has urged residents to report violations, supporting the campaign for a healthier environment around schools. Follow-up inspections will be conducted post-deadline to ensure adherence, with non-compliant vendors facing immediate legal action.

Meanwhile, HDMC’s tobacco vending licence initiative has seen a strong response. Over 150 vendors have obtained official licences, while another 300 applications are under review. Special awareness mela events have been organized in Hubballi and Dharwad to educate vendors on compliance.

Dr. Sridhar Dandappanavar, HDMC health official, confirmed that stricter enforcement measures will begin in April, ensuring sustained efforts against COTPA violations.
