By the time Adriana Ivich faced her comprehensive exams in August 2024, she had exhausted nearly every resource to ready herself. To secure her spot as a PhD candidate in biomedical informatics at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, she had to present her research proposal and undergo an intense closed-door examination by her faculty committee.

“It’s one of the toughest phases in a PhD journey,” Ivich admits. “Despite years of preparation, you never truly know what to expect.”

Yet, she found a way to predict the unpredictable. Months earlier, she inputted the backgrounds and publications of her five committee members into ChatGPT. Using this AI-driven approach, she simulated their responses, allowing her to foresee potential questions and identify knowledge gaps. When the actual exam arrived, it mirrored AI’s predictions, and she passed effortlessly.

Her innovative approach highlights how studentsare pushing AI’s boundaries beyond simple essay drafting. Now, AI chatbots serve as tutors, interviewers, debate partners, and language coaches.
