Schools in Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada have been closed due to heavy rains as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Coastal Karnataka on June 27. Dakshina Kannada district Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan declared a holiday for all Anganwadis and schools in the district. This includes government, aided, and private primary and high schools.

Schools Closed: Official Notification

“A holiday has been declared in all schools in Mangaluru on June 27 as heavy rain continued in the district. A red alert has been declared in the district tomorrow. Fishermen have been instructed to not venture into fishing. The public has been advised to avoid the seashore or river bank,” stated Mangaluru Deputy Commissioner in the order.

Apart from school closures, the district administration has initiated various precautionary measures as the district experiences heavy rainfall with the onset of the monsoon. Areas prone to landslides have been identified, and measures have been implemented to mitigate risks.

Advisory Issued for Locals

Residents have been asked to avoid water bodies such as low-lying areas, ponds, rivers, and the seashore. Deputy Commissioner Muhilan also advised the general public to report any natural calamities to the relevant authorities.

Weather Update

As per the latest update from the IMD, squally weather with wind speeds of 35 kmph to 45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, is likely to prevail along the Karnataka coast. The IMD has issued a red alert for Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada districts of Karnataka. Heavy to very heavy rain, along with winds of 30-40 km/h, is predicted for coastal Karnataka on Thursday, with rainfall expected to continue from June 28 to June 30.
