Bengaluru: Higher Education Minister Dr. M.C. Sudhakar revealed in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday that 412 out of 440 government degree colleges in Karnataka are functioning without principals.

The statement came in response to a query raised by Bijapur City MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal, who questioned the delay in principal appointments despite the recruitment process beginning in 2022. Yatnal pointed out that applications were invited, an examination was conducted in 2023, and a merit list was released, yet the positions remain vacant.

Addressing the concerns, Sudhakar stated that the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) had already conducted the exam, and the KEA commissioner had been instructed to submit the final merit list for appointments.

The severe leadership crisis in government colleges raises concerns over administrative efficiency and academic quality. The long delay in filling these crucial roles highlights the urgency for swift action to ensure better governance in higher education.
