In a city known for relentless preparation and sky-high expectations, a viral video from a JEE Main 2026 felicitation event has sparked a fresh debate — not about ranks, but about mobile phones.

At the event celebrating Session 1 results, toppers were asked a simple question: “What phone do you use?” Instead of premium smartphones, students proudly pulled out basic keypad devices.

One student, Himanshi, who secured 99.47 percentile, showed her feature phone and said she relied on it throughout her preparation. Another topper, Om Shivhare, who scored 99.75 percentile, jokingly replied “iPhone 19” before revealing his simple handset, drawing laughter from the audience.

The rise of ‘focus phones’ in Kota

In Kota’s intense coaching culture, so-called “focus phones” — basic devices limited to calls and text messages — have become increasingly common among aspirants preparing for competitive exams like the Joint Entrance Examination Main.

These phones help students avoid distractions from social media, gaming apps and endless notifications. Several toppers said they stayed away from social networking platforms entirely to maintain concentration during gruelling study schedules.

Local shops in Kota reportedly even market keypad phones specifically to students as distraction-free alternatives.

Social media reacts

The video, widely circulated on X and Instagram, has drawn mixed reactions. Many praised the students’ discipline and self-control, calling focus the “real currency” in Kota.

Others argued that smartphones, when used wisely, can be powerful learning tools, offering access to AI tutors, mock tests and digital study resources. Some users pointed out that technology itself is not the problem — misuse is.

As debates continue, one message stands clear: in India’s high-pressure exam ecosystem, simplicity and self-discipline remain powerful tools for success.
