A viral social media post has reignited debate over unemployment and underemployment in India after a woman shared her interaction with a highly qualified Rapido rider struggling to find stable work.
The post, shared on X by Sakshi, described how the rider began a conversation during a booked trip and asked if she could help him find “any kind of work” to meet daily expenses.
Degrees but no job security
When asked about his education, the rider reportedly revealed that he holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, a Master’s degree in Mathematics and a B.Ed. qualification. He had also spent five to six years preparing for government teaching examinations.
Despite his academic background, he is currently working with Rapido to support himself.
Sakshi questioned the common belief that studying hard and earning degrees guarantees stability. “What happens when someone does everything right and still has no secure job?” she wrote.
Wider concerns over employment
The story struck a chord with many users, especially amid growing conversations about artificial intelligence and shifting job markets. Several commenters shared personal experiences of layoffs, business closures and career setbacks.
Some argued that academic qualifications alone are no longer sufficient in a rapidly changing economy. Others emphasised the need for skill-based learning and adaptability rather than relying solely on degrees.
While opinions differed, the discussion underscored a larger concern — the widening gap between education and employment opportunities. For many young professionals, the promise of stability through education is being tested by market realities.
The viral post continues to fuel reflection on how India’s education system and job ecosystem must evolve to better align qualifications with meaningful opportunities.
