At the inauguration of a three-day national workshop on ‘Kannada Media Field—Opportunities and Skills’ at Mangalore University, Dr. Niranjan Vanalli, Vice-Chancellor of Bangalore North University, highlighted the dual importance of skills and values in the media profession.

While acknowledging the abundance of opportunities in the field—including journalism, advertising, public relations, and event management—Vanalli stressed that language proficiency, effective communication, and writing style are critical for success. “Words are our weapons. Without an understanding of writing and perception, media aspirants cannot thrive,” he stated.

However, he also warned that values and social responsibility must not be overlooked in the pursuit of success, urging the industry to offer better compensation to attract genuine talent.

Mangalore University Registrar K Raju Mogaveera described journalists as “contemporary historians”, emphasizing clarity and truth in reporting. Vice-Chancellor PL Dharma, who presided over the event, echoed the importance of language and ethics in media.

Technical sessions at the workshop included:

  • Feature Writing: Language and Style – Niranjan Vanalli

  • Writing Language and Sensitivity – Narendra Rai Derla

  • Press Photography: Current Challenges – Astro Mohan

  • The workshop, organised by SVP Kannada Adhyayana Sanstha and supported by the PM USHA scheme, aims to guide students in understanding the evolving media landscape and mastering essential skills.
