MP Brijesh Chowta Pushes for Tulu Language Recognition in Eighth Schedule
Mangaluru’s Dakshina Kannada MP, Captain Brijesh Chowta, has brought the issue of including the Tulu language in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution to the forefront. During a recent parliament session, Chowta questioned the Government about its awareness of the longstanding demand from people in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Kasaragod for Tulu’s inclusion. He sought information on any actions taken to address this request and on broader efforts to incorporate additional languages into the Eighth Schedule.
Chowta referenced previous attempts by the Pahwa Committee (1996) and the Sitakant Mohapatra Committee (2003) to establish criteria for such inclusions. In response, Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityananda Rai acknowledged the ongoing demands for various languages, including Tulu, to be included. However, Rai noted that there are no fixed criteria for inclusion, given the evolving nature of linguistic and socio-cultural factors.
The Minister also highlighted that previous efforts by the Pahwa and Mohapatra Committees to set definitive criteria were inconclusive. The Government remains aware of the sentiments regarding Tulu and other languages, and any requests for inclusion in the Eighth Schedule will be considered with these factors in mind.
