Mangalore University (MU) has decided to close its Yoga Therapy Centre at University College, Hampankatta, just a year after its launch. The facility, offering morning and evening sessions with trained therapists, will now be merged with the existing centre on MU’s main campus in Konaje.

Despite requests from syndicate members to keep the centre operational, university officials cited a lack of demand and economic viability as reasons for the closure. According to Vice-Chancellor PL Dharma, the presence of other similar centres meeting international standards in the vicinity led to insufficient patronage. The financial burden of maintaining the centre, including staff salaries, made it unsustainable.

A senior professor involved in the centre’s establishment criticized the university for failing to promote the facility. “Without publicizing the centre, how could MU expect people to avail of its services?” he questioned. He also noted that the centre lacked adequate and efficient staff, and operations ceased within weeks of its opening. Registered clients reportedly discontinued, and equipment has since been shifted back to the Human Consciousness and Yogic Sciences department in Konaje.

University College, Hampankatta, was MU’s first constituent college outside its main campus to host such a facility. With affordable fees under ₹1,000 per month, the centre also aligned with the Fit India Movement initiative. However, the lack of effective management and outreach ultimately led to its downfall.
