The Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) Class XII exams are underway, with 16 flying squads deployed across Amritsar to inspect centres. On February 24, five teams visited 11 centres. The general English exam is set for February 28, with major subjects yet to follow. Despite no centre being marked as “sensitive,” mass copying remains a concern in private and affiliated schools.

Cheating concerns in private schools

Over the years, certain private and affiliated schools in Baba Bakala, Ajnala, and Chogawan have gained a reputation for facilitating mass cheating. While post-pandemic cases dropped by 90%, invigilators in some schools allegedly help students secure 80%+ marks for ₹50,000–₹80,000 per student. Officials acknowledge this as an “open secret”.

Lax enforcement and manipulation

Though the PSEB once mandated CCTV surveillance, the practice was halted in Amritsar. Schools also flout admission rules, enrolling dummy students or admitting candidates from outside districts. Teachers’ Annual Confidential Reports (ACRs) being tied to results further fuels the issue.

English & math: Cheating hotspots

Students resort to mass copying, particularly in English and mathematics, due to teacher shortages and pressure to meet visa requirements for overseas migration. Despite threats of de-affiliation, the practice persists unchecked.
