Due to recent heavy rains causing multiple holidays in Pre-University (PU) colleges, the Deputy Director of Pre-University Education (DDPU) has directed colleges in Dakshina Kannada to hold classes on Saturdays and Sundays to make up for lost time. While this move aims to ensure the syllabus is completed on time, it has sparked concerns among parents and teachers about potential burnout from continuous work.
The DDPU’s office reported that PU colleges in the region have had 11 holidays so far due to the rain. CD Jayanna, Dakshina Kannada DDPU, has instructed colleges to conduct additional classes, emphasizing the importance of covering the syllabus before mid-term exams. However, many parents and educators are pushing back against holding classes on Sundays. They argue that students need a break from their demanding academic schedules. One parent from Kinnigoli expressed concern that Sunday classes would interfere with his son’s CET/NEET coaching.
Jayanand N Suvarna, principal of Govt PU College Shaktinagar and president of the Dakshina Kannada Pre-University Colleges Principals’ Association, stated that most colleges will hold full-day classes on 10 Saturdays and five Sundays. However, Jayanna clarified that Sunday classes are optional and left to the discretion of each college’s management, based on feedback from students, parents, and teachers.
