In a remarkable shift, rural students in Mangaluru are now almost on par with their urban counterparts in SSLC-1 exam results. The latest data reveals that rural students achieved a 90.7% pass rate, with 15,543 out of 17,142 passing, while urban students recorded a slightly higher 91.8%, with 9,783 out of 10,654 clearing the exam.

Educators attribute this narrowing gap to improvements in infrastructure, better learning platforms, and growing awareness among parents in rural areas. A decade ago, rural students faced a significant disadvantage, with many failing to clear the SSLC exam. However, the situation has dramatically changed, with some rural students now scoring over 620 marks on their first attempt.

Government high school teacher Shambhu Shankar from Belthangady highlighted that urban students once consistently outperformed their rural peers due to superior facilities and coaching. But now, rural students benefit from better academic resources, motivated by educated parents and older siblings pursuing higher education.

The shift is also evident in the rise of rural government and aided schools, with 148 schools in Dakshina Kannada district achieving 100% results—48 of which are rural government schools. While girls continue to excel in both rural and urban areas, special needs students also performed exceptionally well, with 251 out of 273 passing the exam.
