Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, Mangaluru, marked Librarians’ Day with an engaging program celebrating the birth anniversary of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan, the father of Library Science in India. The event highlighted the indispensable role of libraries as centers of knowledge and encouraged students and faculty to effectively utilise both print and digital resources for academic excellence and research.
Honouring the legacy of Dr. Ranganathan
The program began with a lamp lighting ceremony attended by dignitaries including Dr. Rekha D. Pai, Chief Librarian and Associate Professor, MIT, MAHE, Manipal; Dr. S.S. Injaganeri, Principal of Sahyadri College; Sri. Jagannath Chowta, Trustee of Bhandary Foundation, Mangaluru; and Dr. Bharathi K, Librarian. Also present were the Vice Principal, faculty members, staff, and students.
Dr. Bharathi K provided a detailed overview of the event, sharing insights into how faculty and students are optimising the use of digital library resources to support their academic pursuits.
Libraries in the digital age
The keynote address by Dr. Rekha D. Pai revisited the “Five Laws of Library Science” framed by Dr. Ranganathan, explaining their continued importance in modern education. She stressed that libraries today are dynamic centers of learning, shaped by both print and electronic resources. Dr. Pai encouraged the academic community to explore online platforms and e-resources for enhancing research and learning.
Sri. Jagannath Chowta lauded librarians for their dedication, stating that their commitment enriches the academic environment and empowers students to make the best use of library facilities. He urged everyone to leverage available resources to support academic success.
Academic growth through libraries
In his presidential address, Dr. S.S. Injaganeri congratulated the library team for promoting information literacy and adapting to changing educational needs. He emphasised the role of libraries as innovation hubs within academic institutions and applauded the efforts to create an environment conducive to lifelong learning.
The event also recognised students and staff who demonstrated outstanding use of library resources, inspiring others to incorporate these tools into their educational and research activities.
