A national survey has confirmed what many parents from Bengaluru to Delhi have been dreading—school fees have surged by 50–80% or more in the last three years. Conducted by LocalCircles across 309 districts, the survey gathered input from over 31,000 parents, revealing deep frustration over rising educational costs and state inaction.

A staggering 44% of parents said their child’s school hiked fees by 50–80%, while 8% reported a jump of over 80%. Another 8% noted increases between 30–50%. Despite the widespread financial pressure, only 7% of respondents felt their state government had effectively capped fee hikes.

An overwhelming 93% said their states had failed to regulate fees, with 47% alleging the issue wasn’t even taken up and 46% saying state efforts had no impact. Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra remain the only states with active school fee regulation mechanisms.

LocalCircles founder Sachin Taparia said they received over 100 complaints this March and April, prompting the survey. He warned that private education, especially international curriculums, is becoming unaffordable for middle and lower-income families, forcing many to cut back on essentials or borrow money.

Parents in Hyderabad have reported private schools doubling fees for LKG to Class 3. In Bengaluru and Delhi, fee hikes between 10–30% have also sparked outrage.

Taparia also flagged a steep 6% drop in student enrolment, as per the government’s UDISE+ data, underscoring the urgent need for more affordable and inclusive education policies.
