Mangaluru: St. Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangaluru, organised its annual athletic meet “Go for Gold 2026” at the college grounds on April 7, 2026, witnessing enthusiastic participation from students and staff.

The event, organised by the Department of Physical Education and the Sports & Wellness Group, began at 9:00 am with vibrant celebrations promoting fitness, sportsmanship, and teamwork.

Grand inauguration with sports dignitary

The athletic meet was inaugurated by Mr. Mohit Kamat, former international badminton player and Co-founder & CEO of Baddyzone Sports Club, who hoisted the flag and declared the event open.

Dignitaries present on the occasion included Rev. Fr. Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, Director; Dr. Rio D’Souza, Principal; Dr. K. Jyothi, Dean – Student Welfare; Ms. Priya Miranda, Chairperson of Sports & Wellness Group; Mr. Chitharanjan, Convener; Ms. Himani Kishan Raj, Co-Convenor; and Ms. Vaneesha V. Rodrigues, Physical Education Director.

Colourful march past and ceremonial opening

The programme featured a colourful march past by students, showcasing discipline and team spirit. This was followed by the ceremonial flag hoisting and the symbolic handing over of the torch to national-level sports participants.

Dr. K. Jyothi welcomed the gathering and introduced the chief guest.

Emphasis on sports and fitness

In his address, Mr. Mohit Kamat encouraged students to actively engage in sports for overall fitness and personal development. He highlighted the growing career opportunities in the sports sector and urged students to pursue sports alongside academics.

Athletic events and participation

The day witnessed a series of athletic events with active participation from students and staff. The oath-taking ceremony was led by Ms. Trivia Creda Veigas, a third-year CSE student and accomplished badminton player who has represented VTU at the South Zone Inter-University tournament and secured notable achievements at the state level.

Valedictory and conclusion

The formal programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms. Himani Kishan Raj. The event was compered by Mr. Joel D’Mello and Ms. Florence Nishmitha.

The athletic meet concluded with a valedictory ceremony, prize distribution, and a DJ session, marking the end of a spirited and successful event.
