Sophia High School on Palace Road is set to celebrate its diamond jubilee on August 3. Prominent alumni, including former Olympian Nisha Millet, Supreme Court judge Justice B V Nagarathna, actor Deepika Padukone, and Karnatik vocalist Sudha Ragunathan, will join the festivities.
Founded in 1949 as the ‘Convent of Sacred Heart’ with just 17 students, the school was renamed Sophia High School in 1957. Today, it boasts a sprawling campus with 2,900 students and is affectionately called ‘Sapphires.’
The celebration will feature various activities organized by the school’s administration and alumni association, including campus tours, interactions with staff, and a visit to the canteen. “We will sing old school songs, share our memories, and honor our former teachers,” said Priya Chetty Rajagopal, president of the Sophia Alumni Association.
A memory box initiative will see alumni bringing trophies, notebooks, and other memorabilia to reignite old memories. Priya plans to bring her school skirt, signed by classmates upon graduation. Over 1,500 alumni, including around 100 ‘old boys’ from when the school admitted male students until Class 4, are expected to attend.
Angelina White, a Class 1 teacher, shares a special bond with the school, as her mother also taught there. “The current staff remembers when my mother was pregnant with me. Now, my daughter studies here too,” she said.
Principal Sr Alpana Palatty is excited about the event, emphasizing the importance of alumni in preserving the school’s legacy. “They are the main asset of the institution,” she said.
