Mangaluru: St Aloysius (Deemed to be University), Mangaluru, has achieved a historic milestone by securing the prestigious Category-I Status under the University Grants Commission (UGC) Graded Autonomy Regulations, placing it among India’s highest-performing higher educational institutions.
With this achievement, St Aloysius becomes the second Deemed-to-be University in Karnataka and among only 45 universities in India to receive the coveted Category-I recognition, reflecting the institution’s commitment to academic excellence, innovation, research, and nation-building.
Recognition Among India’s Top Universities
India currently has 1,292 universities, including Central Universities, State Universities, Deemed-to-be Universities, and Private Universities. Among the country’s 157 Deemed-to-be Universities, only 26 institutions have been granted Category-I status. Across all universities in India, only about 45 institutions enjoy this prestigious recognition, highlighting its exclusivity and significance.
Karnataka, one of India’s leading educational hubs, is home to 17 Deemed-to-be Universities. Within this competitive academic landscape, St Aloysius (Deemed to be University) has emerged as one of only two private institutions in the state to achieve Category-I status.
Excellence Backed by NAAC A++ Accreditation
The Category-I status has been conferred based on the University’s outstanding academic and institutional performance. St Aloysius holds the prestigious NAAC A++ Grade with an impressive CGPA of 3.67 on a four-point scale, reflecting excellence across teaching-learning processes, curriculum design, research, governance, infrastructure, innovation, student support, community engagement, and institutional values.
Founded in 1880 by the Jesuits, St Aloysius has built a legacy spanning 146 years, consistently distinguishing itself as one of India’s premier educational institutions. The conferment of Deemed-to-be University status in January 2024 further accelerated its transformation into a multidisciplinary, research-driven institution with a global outlook.
Enhanced Academic Freedom and Autonomy
The Category-I recognition provides the University with substantial academic and administrative autonomy under the UGC Graded Autonomy Regulations.
The University can now introduce new academic programmes, schools, departments, centres, diploma courses, certificate programmes, and interdisciplinary initiatives without prior approval from the UGC. This flexibility will enable the institution to respond quickly to emerging disciplines, industry requirements, technological advancements, and societal needs.
The University can also establish constituent units and off-campus centres within its jurisdiction, creating greater access to quality higher education and expanding its academic footprint.
Strengthening Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship
One of the key advantages of Category-I status is the freedom to establish research parks, incubation centres, innovation hubs, entrepreneurship ecosystems, and university-society linkage centres.
These initiatives are expected to strengthen innovation, start-up culture, technology transfer, and industry-academia collaboration while encouraging students and researchers to develop solutions for contemporary challenges.
The University will also have greater flexibility to introduce skill-based programmes aligned with the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF), enhancing employability, entrepreneurship, and workforce readiness among students.
Expanding Global Engagement
The new status enables St Aloysius University to recruit internationally renowned faculty members from globally ranked institutions, strengthening academic quality and internationalisation efforts.
The University can appoint foreign faculty members beyond its sanctioned strength and attract a larger number of international students, creating a more diverse and globally connected academic environment.
Additionally, the institution can establish collaborations with leading international universities without prior UGC approval, facilitating joint research projects, dual-degree programmes, faculty exchanges, student mobility initiatives, and international centres of excellence.
A Milestone in a 146-Year Legacy
The achievement reflects the collective efforts of generations of Jesuit leaders, administrators, faculty members, staff, students, alumni, parents, and well-wishers who have contributed to building the institution’s culture of excellence.
With enhanced autonomy and a strong foundation rooted in Jesuit values, St Aloysius University aims to further strengthen its role as a centre for learning, research, innovation, and social transformation while contributing to India’s vision of becoming a global knowledge leader.
The recognition marks a proud moment not only for the University community but also for Karnataka’s higher education sector and the nation at large.
