Mangaluru: St Aloysius (Deemed to be University) observed National Science Day at the LCRI Hall with the theme “Women in Science – Catalysing Vikasit Bharat”, highlighting the role of women in scientific advancement and the importance of research culture in nation-building.

National Science Day is commemorated annually in India to mark the discovery of the Raman Effect by Nobel Laureate C. V. Raman, whose work laid the foundation for modern spectroscopy and earned global recognition for Indian science.

The programme brought together academic leaders, faculty members and students to reflect on scientific temper, innovation and inclusivity in research.

Distinguished guests and dignitaries

Prof. Jayakara Bhandary, Principal and Professor of Botany at Dr P. Dayananda Pai – P. Sathisha Pai Government First Grade College, was the Chief Guest. Prof. Vidya Shetty, Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, attended as the Guest of Honour.

The programme was presided over by Rev. Dr Praveen Martis SJ, Vice Chancellor of St Aloysius University. Also present on the dais were Rev. Dr Melwyn D’Cunha SJ, Pro Vice Chancellor; Dr Ronald Nazareth, Registrar; Dr Ruban S., Dean of Engineering; Dr Aruna Kalkura T., Director, Xavier Block; Dr Asha Abraham, Director, LCRI Block; Dr Jyothi Miranda, Convener; Dr Geetha Pinto, Co-convenor; and Dr Renita Maria D’Souza, Dean of Life Sciences.

Emphasising scientific temper and women’s leadership

In his address, Prof. Jayakara Bhandary emphasised the importance of cultivating scientific temper and strengthening research culture among students. He encouraged young scholars, particularly women, to assume leadership roles in scientific domains and contribute actively to innovation and development.

Prof. Vidya Shetty spoke on the significance of National Science Day and reflected on the groundbreaking discovery of Sir C. V. Raman. She highlighted the expanding contributions of women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and underscored the need to create enabling ecosystems for women scientists to thrive.

Raman spectroscopy and legacy of Rev. Dr Leo D’Souza

In his presidential address, Rev. Dr Praveen Martis elaborated on Raman Spectroscopy and its wide-ranging applications in chemistry, physics and medicine. He stressed that scientific discoveries must translate into practical solutions that benefit society.

He also paid tribute to the late Rev. Dr Leo D’Souza SJ, former Principal of St Aloysius College and a distinguished scientist, recalling his significant contributions to the field of plant biotechnology and scientific research.

Dr Ronald Nazareth highlighted the importance of passion and curiosity in research, urging students to pursue innovation with dedication and integrity.

Tribute to a renowned scientist

A heartfelt tribute was paid to Rev. Dr Leo D’Souza SJ, who recently passed away. Dr Shashikiran Nivas, Research Coordinator, Laboratory of Applied Biology, spoke about his scientific achievements and enduring legacy. A memorial video was screened in his honour, commemorating his service to science and education.

The programme was compered by Ms Akshitha, Assistant Professor. Dr Jyothi Miranda welcomed the gathering, and Dr Geetha Pinto proposed the vote of thanks.

The observance of National Science Day at St Aloysius University reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to promoting research excellence, encouraging women in science, and nurturing a culture of innovation aligned with the vision of a developed and knowledge-driven India.
